Locker room talk. Chatter in the work place. Exchanges via text. Messages in movies. References in songs…
Before I digress any more, let it be known that I am guilty of practicing impure speech. This is something that I engage in so nonchalantly, that I barely even notice it. However, it’s still something I know I must rid myself of.
“The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” James 3:6
It says it right here in James. The tongue itself is a fire starter. Before we even speak, there is practically no thought going into what we’re saying, even though it could very likely be very detrimental to those around us. I agree, it’s so easy to get someone to smirk when you make a clever remark, referencing something less than Godly. But I think we can both agree that God has better for us.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29
It’s very clear in Scripture that we must practice purity. Not only in the way we conduct ourselves, but also in the way we speak.
The words we say are very capable of doing beautiful things, we simply must let Jesus take control.
Don’t get me wrong, some subliminal messages can be harmless, and something to enjoy.
But let’s agree to something today. Let’s practice wholesome speech. Simply for the glory of God, and the encouragement of others.
